Of Teaching English Overseas

August 15th, 2010 by admin

Have you ever thought of putting your English-speaking skills to a better use than just talking?  Do you enjoy travelling and meeting new people?  Do you derive pleasure from learning new cultures and languages?  Are you interested in earning a little extra cash to backpack your way through Europe?  Or maybe your goal is to settle into a lifelong career in the teaching profession?  Then perhaps a chance to teach English overseas is just the thing for you.

Teaching English as a foreign language )TEFL) can be such a rewarding experience.  You will not only have influence over your students but also over the communities they live in.  Maybe you do not consider yourself qualified for such a job.  You really might be surprised as to how many places can be downright indifferent to your skill set, however.  In many parts of the world, all you would need is a 4-year Bachelors’ degree and be from a native-speaking country to be hired.  Some places might require a TEFL degree, a certain number of years of experience under your belt, good communication skills, and a true passion for other countries and ways of living.  This will hardly be the case in underdeveloped nations where just you being a native English speaker is more than enough, though.  For the most part, there are not too many requirements to teach English overseas.

As the world becomes more and more globalized, borders are constantly being broken down and information is shared more freely.  It is only natural to have the inclination to give back or pay it forward by enhancing others as it were.  Having the opportunity to teach English overseas is a great way to do just that all the while enriching your own life.  Language, culture, stories are all meant to be shared and passed on.  What better way of doing that is there than bringing people of all ages together through understanding, fun, and education?  You can become a sort of ambassador for your home country or city just by devising knowledgeable yet entertaining lesson plans for your no-doubt eager students.

All indications are of a positive nature when considering to teach English overseas.  The international experience you will gain will doubtless be indispensable and the fun you will have unforgettable.
